Pets are a popular gift each year, but there are many things to consider before making the decision.
The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley has many dogs and cats and even two pot belly pigs that are waiting for a forever home.
Workers say during the holidays, they get people looking for pets as Christmas gifts. But, in some cases the new pet owners realize they can't provide the home needed for the pets.
The Humane Society says pet care is just like caring for a child. They recommend that you do your research on the animal and get as much information as you can.
The Humane Society can help you with that too.
Kimberly Cowman started volunteering after wanting a career change and after her two pets died; she is now a kennel technician.
"They can tell you everything about a dog and everything about a cat, said Cowman, kennel technician. And your knowledge is well-known before you leave this place about how the animals are and how they're good with kids and around people its really nice."
Shelter workers say, a good way to find out if you want to adopt an animal is to volunteer at a shelter.
